On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print “Harefield Place, Middlesex.”. DATE PRINTED: 1811, dated on the print SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 15.5 x 11.5 cm (6 x 4.5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by John Greig from an original study by George Sidney Shepherd. George “Sidney” Shepherd (1784–1862) was a British draughtsman and watercolour painter. Shepherd was a topographical, architectural and landscape painter. Until 1793 he lived in France, returning to Britain on the outbreak of the Great French War. Shepherd was awarded a silver palette by the Society of Arts in 1803 and again in the following year. PROVENANCE: Published in The Beauties of England and Wales by John Britton (1771. .1857). The Beauties of England and Wales (1801-1815) was a series of books describing the topography and local history of England and Wales. Produced by a variety of London publishers, the work appeared in 18 multi-part volumes arranged by county, individually Each volume contained engraved illustrations by artists such as Thomas Hearne, J. M. W. Turner, John Varley, Benjamin West. Readers included Charles Dickens. TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The ancient Manor of Harefield was held by the Newdigate family from about 1440. The old Manor house, Harefield Place, adjacent to St Mary the Virgin church, was replaced in 1786, when a new mansion house was built at Harefield Lodge. The old ‘Harefield Place’ fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1813, whereupon the new Manor house became known as Harefield Place. It was sold by Charles Newdigate Newdegate in 1877. In 1938 it was acquired by the local authority to serve as a hospital. In 1959 the land was redeveloped and is now the Harefield Place Golf Club. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints.
